Alsace-Lorraine 2021
Visiting Friends
A small group of people have some friends in the Alsace-Lorraine region so we went there to reunite and explore. It's a magical area of mixed French and German history where towns with names like Scherwiller are right next to Châtenois. Taking a number of day trips, we marveled at the colorful half-timbered houses, visited a chocolate factory, ate our fill of bretzels, attended a raptor show, and explored castles. Alas, we did not have time to follow the celebrated wine route but it'll still be there next time. Alsace-Lorraine is a perfect area to gallivant and traipse smallish towns: they are human-scaled and so so pretty.
Cobblestones
The number of photos we have of the half-timbered buildings... ! This street was particularly pretty, even with the gray clouds, because of the wet cobblestones. That curve in the street makes one want to discover what's around the corner.
Half-Timbered
One of the towns we stayed in was Sélestat, where we discovered this unusual blue building. That red and white flag is the Alsace regional banner and its origins can be traced back to the Duke of Lorraine's flag created in the 11th century.
Glace
We stopped for ice cream for a mid-afternoon break just about every day. It's crazy delicious and impossible to pass up. Chose an independent shop or our favorite chain, Amorino, which has expanded into many areas of the United States.
