Real Estate Hunting
Megan was interested in finding an apartment in France for a respite from the the dreary days of Minnesota winters. She decided on the area around Carcassonne so we met there to explore and shop for real estate. The central masterpiece of this region is the incredibly well-preserved medieval town of Carcassonne, pictured below at night. It's possible to roam for days in the interior of the fortress and its ramparts but after a bit of snooping around we had things to do! We divided our days in two: the mornings were devoted to apartment shopping and the afternoons were dedicated to exploring the small villages of the Languedoc area. It's a terribly charming area known for being the capital of cassoulet, which we ate a lot of!
Serendipity
We happened upon an annual festival to bless the wheat harvest. A raucous parade toured the crowded town square complete with a band, costumed revelers, and lots and lots of confetti (signifying kernels of wheat).
Cassoulet
Typically eaten at lunch, this dense, filling, warm, delicious dish was invented in this region. Each chef has their own particular recipe, and each one is the only authentic one. Share it or plan to take home the leftovers!
Respite
Pounding the streets every day on the quest for the perfect apartment for Megan called for many breaks. We almost always stopped at a bar, choosing chilled or warm beverages, depending on the temp of the day.
